Mico C.A.R.E. Centre

The Mico C.A.R.E. Centre is a purpose-built special education facility designed as a contemporary interpretation of Jamaica’s Georgian vernacular within a historic town setting. Following archival recording and structural assessment of a derelict house on the site, the project adopted a “build back better” approach, using proportion, roof form, and ordered detailing to re-establish architectural continuity while meeting modern institutional standards.

  • Location: St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica

  • Project type: Institutional / special education facility

  • Role: Architectural designer; conservation and reconstruction lead

  • Scope: Measured drawings and archival recording, conservation assessment, reconstruction design, architectural coordination

  • Project status: Completed

  • Why it mattered: The project demonstrates how conservation principles, drawing on Georgian precedent and the concept of interpretive reconstruction, can inform new construction in historic communities, delivering a durable, accessible, and contextually appropriate educational facility that respects heritage while exceeding the performance of the original structure
